Assessment:
Universal Screening:
Aimsweb Universal Screening is our tiered assessment tool to monitor and manage the progress of our students K-8. Each student is screened 3 times a year to see a snippet of their global performance. This universal screening tool is combined with our classroom formative assessments to evaluate student performance & determine RTI intervention solutions for low, middle, and high performing students. Here is a breakdown of the tiered model:
TIER 1: Universal Screening: Establishes benchmarks three times a year with standard universal screening probes. Reports identify students at risk, help individualize instruction, evaluate student progress, and demonstrate Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). They also serve as an accountability and communication tool for system improvement.
TIER 2: Progress Monitoring: Begin to progress monitor students at risk using monthly assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional changes and short interventions.
TIER 3: Intensive Progress Monitoring: Use it for frequent assessment and monitoring of students at risk or with severe needs. Expected rates of progress are prescribed and compared to actual progress, based on an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or other goals. Reports evaluate student progress, prescribe program changes and revisions, monitor interventions, ensure IEP success and serve as an accountability and communication tool for program evaluation and reporting.
Additionally, Aimsweb manages, charts, and reports CBM assessment data to provide a pro-active and preventative solution to inform instruction, demonstrate improvement, and report success.

Formative Assessments:
Formative assessment is designed to monitor student learning & progress while providing ongoing feedback that can be used to inform my instruction. Its really designed to customize learning for my kids & inform my instruction tailored to best fit the needs of all students. Additionally, formative assessments help students identify their strengths & weaknesses while targeting areas that need work. It also allows me to recognize where students are struggling and intervene immediately.

Mr. C's Beliefs:
I'm a firm believer in the use of formative assessments for many reasons. First, formative assessments are reflective processes that allow students to learn from their mistakes. Formative assessment captures multiple forms of learning through written, oral, speaking and listening. Formative assessment best demonstrates a student's ability to be creative, innovative, solve problems, and show communication and collaboration abilities. Most important, formative assessments inform my instruction and allow me to truly customize the learning experience for each student. Summative means of assessment will certainly be helpful to ensure my students are achieving benchmark and common core standards. I'll be able to gear my standards-based instruction toward the outcomes of our students. The combination of Aimsweb, formative and summative assessments give me a full picture of each child's ability.
