Hi parents...
Just wanted to give you an update as we head into the final 3 weeks leading into Christmas break. We're entering an Informational Text reading unit & Persuasive Letter writing unit. This is the time of year where kids can be distracted sandwiched between 2 decent sized vacations, so we'll do our best to stay focused. I'm hoping the method I'm using to deliver the instruction will help through the "flipped classroom" model. In short, the students will be watching instructional videos from home to receive the lesson. They'll write a short 3, 2, 1 reflection as well. The following day, we begin with the "homework" at school. What I love about this model is we're creating more opportunity to dig deeper into their misconceptions here at school. Additionally, I can differentiate the lessons and challenge students with more complex lessons who are ready, and truly allow the kids to move at their own pace. Students can also go back and watch the videos many times. They don't always remember the lesson from school! Read all about the flipped classroom by clicking here.
Here is how it works:
1. Students have 2 sets of lessons to watch - See the Informational Text Reading Unit here & YouTube Playlist here the Opinion Writing - Persuasive Letter Unit here & YouTube Playlist here.
2. Students watch my video that introduces the night's topic and what we'll be doing in school the next day.
3. Students watch the LearnZillion instructional video for that night. They need to make sure the login to their LearnZillion accounts! They know the user name & passwords. Its their school username and logins.
4. Students login to Google Classroom and fill out the reflection for that night. 3, 2, 1 - 3 things they've learned, 2 things that really interested them or they want to know more about, and 1 thing they may have not understood or have questions about. When they come in the next day, we'll use these reflections to address what students don't understand or even explore areas of interest. This will help me with organizing small groups and one-on-one needs. :)
5. Homework done! :)
See my Unit introduction videos below. I encourage you to sit with your child and let them show you how Google Classroom & LearnZillion work. :)
Lastly... for those without internet or devices at home, have no fear! I am here daily at 7:30am. Your child can come before school or watch during breakfast time. I'd recommend homework haven as well. Please contact me if you have any issues with your child completing the work and we will make a plan together.
Yours in education,
Mr. C
